What is Hoodia Gordonii?
Hoodia Gordonii is one of several species of the Hoodia succulent plant. It is native to South Africa and is found mainly in the Kalahari Desert region.
Hoodia Gordonii has been used for centuries by the San Tribes people to ward off hunger during long trips in the desert. The Gordonii variety of the Hoodia species is the only one that contains the natural appetite suppressant molecule, now identified by scientists as P57. Read more about hoodia gordonii.
Who are the San and why should I care about them?
The San are universally known as the first people of South Africa. Their society of hunter-gatherer's dates back 27,000 years, and their genetic stock 1,000,000 years. It's believed that the San may indeed represent the oldest genetic stock of modern humanity.
Their once widespread and plentiful population spread from the Zambezi to the Cape of Good Hope and from the Indian to the Atlantic ocean. Some 300 years ago European colonist took away their lands and virtually wiped them out.
These resilient people now number a mere 110,000. They live on the outer fringes of society in abject poverty facing cultural extinction. Now they struggle to win back a foot hold in the lands that were once theirs and on which they roamed freely.
The San are the owners of the traditional rights to the "knowledge" of the use of the hoodia gordonii species. Representing the San, WIMSA recently contested and won their case against a multinational pharmaceutical company that had attempted to "pirate" this knowledge and make a "drug" from hoodia. Because of this, the San's valuable knowledge of the hoodia plant's powers will not go uncompensated.
Where does the best Hoodia come from?
The best Hoodia Gordonii comes from Southern Africa, the only place proven able to grow hoodia gordonii with weight suppressing qualities
Are there any hoodia side effects?
Hoodia Gordonii has been used by the San tribe in Southern Africa for thousands of years without any documented side effects. Recently Hoodia Gordonii has been commercially available and used by a myriad of people in the United States, Canada, U.K. and a many countries in Europe. To date, no side effects have been reported. Long term studies are needed to determine if there are any adverse affects of hoodia use or if there are any medical contraindications.
How long does it take before hoodia starts to work?
The onset of effectiveness depends on the individual. In Leicester, England a study was conducted that showed it could take anywhere between one day to two weeks for the full effect to become noticable. Some companies suggest that you start off with the recommended dosage on the first day (800 mg) and incrementally increase to 1200 mg if you don't feel that your appetite is reduced.
